English Language Arts

Elementary

Elementary English Language Arts programs promote a balanced literacy approach which includes instruction in: phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, writing, and speaking and listening. Our curriculum includes a variety of research-based best practices to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. ELA instruction aligns to Washington State Standards and is designed to build independent readers and writers with strong foundational skills to prepare our students for success in college, career, and life.

Middle School

In 6th, 7th and 8th grade ELA, students read and analyze a wide range of texts in genres including poetry, novels, plays, biographies, nonfiction narratives, speeches, and films. They also learn to write in forms including essays, personal narratives, argumentative texts such as editorials, and research papers. Each grade level is structured around a theme, such as "Challenges" or "Coming of Age."

High School: Grades 9, 10 & 11

Students receiving a 3 or 4 on the ELA Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) at the end of their sophomore year can begin selecting ELA classes from the following categories for their 11th and 12th grade ELA classes.
